“But Moses said to God, ‘Who am I that I should go before Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?’ He said, ‘But I will be with you.'” (Ex.3:11-12a)
Frame speaks on God’s covenantal presence with his people, pointing out that Moses asked who he was before he asked who God was (verse 13).
So who is Moses? God answers, “I will be with you.” That is, Moses is the man whom God is with. Later in the Bible Jesus is revealed as “Immanuel”, which means “God with us.” (Matt.1:23) This is the precious truth for every Christian. We know who we are, have an identity, and it is not in reference to ourselves but to our the covenant presence of our Lord.
Today people try to find themselves, asking, “Who am I?” Christians have an answer, “We are the people – I am the person – whom God is with.” How do we know? Because Jesus is God with us – us who are in covenant with him.
