In liberal democracy, morals and culture decline for the same reason as the economy and standards of living decline. When equality is favored above all else, looking down upon and public disapproval of those lower than oneself is disallowed. Those who have achieved higher standards of living, culture, and morals are not permitted to say theirs is any better than those “lower” than them. Indeed, there is no higher or lower: all is the same. When those attitudes and actions which are harmful or detrimental to the person, the culture, the economy are not condemned but allowed to thrive, then the lower, easier standards will become normative than the higher, more difficult ones. When equality is the goal, the general truth that not all can or even desire to attain high culture, morals, or wealth will bring everyone down to a level achievable by all; which inevitably is nothing.
